Kürbisfest 2023: Cheesy Flying Saucers

The latest post in the Kürbisfest 2023 series.

I am not making this up.

Every year, I like to pick up a couple of Ufo-Kürbis because I like the name, which they earned because they are shaped like classic 1950s flying saucers. (There’s a French name you can use if you have no sense of humor.) I have fun with them.

But as much as I love looking at them, eventually they need to be eaten.

The countertop was installed in 1987.

The white ones have white flesh, fairly firm and without a strong pumpkin/squash taste.

The skin was tougher than I remember.

Once they were hollowed out, I cooked up a filling of ground beef, onion, tomato, and pizza spices. This is one of the first recipes I ever saved and made from Chefkoch.de, and I think it was designed for smaller pumpkins.

But that’s an easy fix–just quintuple the amount of cheese (which I added halfway through baking, so it wouldn’t burn).

And it’s just that easy.

Serve with a green salad and/or garlic bread. Don’t eat the shell!
