Week in Photos 166

It was too hot this week to do anything but sit around in front of the fan, so I finally wrote up a post about Patchwork and another about homemade Beaver Dam pepper sauce, ICYMI. (I know there’s still no July movie post, I don’t know what to say about Disclosure Day).

On Wednesday, there was a solar eclipse, with 90% maximum coverage in Freising. I was able to schedule a tweet eighteen months in advance, but forgot to order special eclipse glasses.

But we just needed an index card and a piece of cardboard I had been saving because it was a nice piece of cardboard.

We watched from a hill on the NW side of Freising. There were about two hundred other people there, mostly families, about half with glasses and the rest with all sorts of crazy homemade devices made out of cardboard and even a few colanders. A man with extra glasses gave us a pair, and wouldn’t take any money for them. We are grateful.

We got the colander to work, too.

That grass was full of biting flies, btw. My legs are still covered in angry itchy red welts.

I did not try to photograph the sun directly, but you can see the eclipse in the lens flare.

Thursday after an appointment we tried out the new “sushi fusion” restaurant in town. It’s all-you-can-eat, and you order drinks and dishes with an app. We tried a little bit of everything except the noodle and curry dishes, sharing so we could taste twice as many things, and the food was excellent. Dumplings, skewers, maki, tataki, tempura, guacamole…

I hope it gets popular (the last time we went to a new restaurant the week it opened, it closed three weeks later), I’d love to go back for my birthday.
