Last March, as I was watching a whole lot of Godzilla movies, I was also doing a little work with fabric paint on fabric. It started out as an exercise for my left hand, but after I switched back to my right I ended up with a couple of nice pieces.
At my first full-time job after college I was assigned a workstation named “Mothra”, and in the years since she has become my favorite non-Godzilla kaiju. The twins in Godzilla vs Spacegodzilla fascinated me, and I wanted to make a piece based on their symbol.
The paint was easy enough; the plan for the quilting is always the hard part. Eventually I decided on a simple outline.

The lengths that I will go to in order to avoid making a normal binding are starting to become embarrassing; for this project I cut the backing smaller than the front and brought the front around and folded it up. It was painful and awkward…

…but the result had a smooth outside edge, like a banner, to be hung in a cave where Mothra is honored.

How cool to bring a longtime fascination to such a lovely fruition!
