I was today years old when I finally saw Ghostbusters II. Just another one of the classic 80s films I missed due to living in the middle of nowhere with parents who didn’t “believe” in paying for cable television and treated the MPAA ratings like an 11th Commandment. I was thirty before I finally saw the original 1984 Ghostbusters, and by then everyone in my fifth grade class had moved on. Sigh.
But I had an AM-FM radio, and Des Moines commercial Top 40 stations, so at least I got to hear Bobby Brown’s theme song over and over and over and over in 1989. These days it pops up a lot in the 80s internet radio, which is possibly how it got stuck in my head for five days straight.
The movie popped up on German Netflix about a month ago.
It’s…really quotable, and I’m a little surprised I didn’t hear more quotes from it in classrooms. I was also surprised to learn it’s a Christmas-New Year’s movie. Finally, I was surprised that watching the film did not make the Ohrwurm go away. Sigh.
