RadishFlix 2021: Highlights of KW24

I thought in a heat wave there would be more movie-watching, but Mr Radish has taken over the TV for the 2020 European soccer cup. TBF, the flopping is as funny as any slapstick. It is also interesting to watch the fans; non-German soccer fans have some very creative patriotic costumes, hats, and signs.

Sons of the Desert (1933)

Cable, original English
In Germany, Laurel and Hardy are known as “Dick und Doof“–Fat and Stupid–which confused me because Laurel is the small one. Tja. In this one, our heroes lie to their wives about not going to a convention drinking fest in Chicago with members of their fraternal organization, get caught out by a newsreel, of all things, and have to do some more lying/sneaking around to cover.

I laughed a bit, but I felt the pacing was off; unfunny gags went on forever. I will give them another try–they’re being shown in cable every Sunday this month–but this movie did not make me immediately long for more, like Abbott and Costello in Hollywood did.

Time-capsule curiosity: The NRA Eagle showed up in the end credits. Need to do some more research on that.

The Lego Movie (2014)

Netflix, original English
I don’t like modern Legos. Six colors of squares and round yellow heads were good enough for me, they’re good enough for everyone else.

Is this the only movie Will Ferrell has starred in where he didn’t take off his pants?

Super Troopers 2 (2018)

Kabel Eins Classics, Deutsch, later Netflix, original English
So I see I didn’t review this back in January, when I saw it in German cable TV, in German, with no subtitles. In my longhand blog, I noted that I laughed at all the slapstick, and the references to Fred Savage, but I couldn’t trust that any of the jokes were translated in a funny way.

The rules of RadishFlix state that a movie may not be watched twice in twelve months, which I occasionally fudge to “in a calendar year” in case something I watched in October comes up the next March, so I have now created the “American comedies that I first saw in German may be rewatched later in original English” exemption, hereafter known as the Spaceballs Rule. This time I laughed at the jokes. Love me some Broken Lizard.
