Ufo Challenge 2026/2027: Big Plans

Digging around for treasure in the sewing room is great for procrastinating updating the blog that you use for procrastinating your sewing. Heh!

After a year off, I’m signed up once again for this year’s UFO Challenge at the Patchworkgilde. I finished 80% of my enrolled projects in 2024-2025 (and the other one only a week late), and now I’m out of small, easily achievable pieces.

“Complete the top” is an allowable goal, so I’m using it four times.

Here are some before pictures (I know they are bad). Each month a number is drawn, so I don’t yet know which project I will be forced to stare down first and which won’t get done because I went to Iowa instead. That’s the excitement of it all.

1. Schnecke

September 2026

It’s “only” missing the embellishments–beads, sequins, etc. I painted and stitched it in 2012.

Goal: Finish.

2. Red Monster

September 2026

English-Paper-Pieced, begun in 2006. It’s bigger than our living room, so I will have to pay someone to layer and quilt it, but before that the edges need to be evened out a bit.

It might not be square. I have no way of knowing.

It’s possible I should have made a plan before just making dozens of blocks while watching TV or sitting on airplanes. Unlikely, but possible.

Goal: Finished top.

3. The blocks from the meme I made in 2019 about making blocks in 1998

Really actually created in 2019

The issue was too many layout options and I couldn’t decide which one looked best. If I can get past that, it should be easy.

I made these while I was living in Indianapolis–the first time.

September 2026

Goal: Finished top. And then it can sit in a box for a few more decades if needs be.

4. Pastel Corners

September 2026

I made three Patience Corners quilts (from that exact link!) in the summer of 2000: One I finished immediately as a wedding gift, one I finished in a Scrapbasket Quilt Guild UFO challenge several years later, and this one. The fabric was hand-dyed in a kitchen sink–remember when sinks used to be stainless steel? Good times.

Goal: Finish it completely.

5. Bye-Bye, Baseball!

September 2026

I don’t know how long something has to sit in a box before it moves from WIP to UFO, but the 2025 Brewers Home Run Quilt has been dormant since last October while I’ve stitched on new projects so let’s get this thing up and outta here and gone.

Goal: Finished top.

6. Pineapple Insanity

September 2026

Another long-term project, foundation paper-pieced. In 2024 I decided I had enough blocks (366) to make my point, whatever that point was–I don’t remember it.

I hate joining FPP blocks, so this should be a real fun time.

Goal: Finished top.
