Mr Radish has relatives in Berlin who take a Bavarian vacation every summer, and we take his folks out to meet up with them for a day. This year we went to Kelheim, and took a ship ride down the Donau to the Benedictine Abbey of Weltenburg. It’s the longest-running monastery brewery in the world (the monastery at Weihenstephan was dissolved in 1803). Try the Barock Dunkel, it’s one of my absolute favorites.
They’re not great pictures, but this is an extremely interesting corner of the world.
This stretch of the Donau (Danube), the “Weltenburg Narrows”, is a national nature monument, full of cliffs and caves, and a popular day-trip destination for families as well as outdoor enthusiasts.
If you want good pictures, you need better weather and equipment than I had.
First, most important thing first: to the Biergarten, for our bodily well-being.
Then a little exploring.
The church in the Abbey was decorated by the Asam Brothers, who decorated the Freisinger Dom and the Asamkirche in Munich among many other churches in Bavaria and Austria.
I really liked the use of natural light behind the main altar.
When the rain became annoying, we headed back to Kelheim.
