Mr Radish has relatives in Berlin who take a Bavarian vacation every summer, and we take his folks out to meet up with them for a day. This year we went to Kelheim<\/a>, and took a ship ride down the Donau<\/a> to the Benedictine Abbey of Weltenburg<\/a>. It’s the longest-running monastery brewery in the world (the monastery at Weihenstephan<\/a> was dissolved in 1803). Try the Barock Dunkel, it’s one of my absolute favorites.

They’re not great pictures, but this is an extremely interesting corner of the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This stretch of the Donau (Danube), the “Weltenburg Narrows”<\/a>, is a national nature monument, full of cliffs and caves, and a popular day-trip destination for families as well as outdoor enthusiasts.

If you want good pictures, you need better weather and equipment than I had. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The church in the Abbey was decorated by the Asam Brothers<\/a>, who decorated the Freisinger Dom and the Asamkirche in Munich among many other churches in Bavaria and Austria. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
