Low-hanging fruit first: 2023 ended with a total of 179 movies, a decrease of 13.5% from 2022<\/a>. I blame podcasts. Complete list is here<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n

87.1% of the films were new-to-me. I can’t decide if this is good or not. Maybe this year I should watch some movies that I know I like.<\/p>\n\n\n

This graph depresses me. But six of the 2020s films were documentaries, and one was from a beloved Bavarian franchise<\/a>, so maybe it’s not as awful as it looks. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Language<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The first pie chart shows all 179 movies organized by their original language. (Yes, “Bavarian\/American”<\/a>–that came straight off the DVD.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“None” is Shaun the Sheep<\/a>, although I think my notes may have said “Barnyard.” There is less variety than I expected.<\/p>\n\n\n

Approximately 75% of the films were seen in their original language, with 90% of the rest dubbed over in German. This is slightly less than last year, but not enough to feel bad about. And what languages did those dubs cover up?<\/p>\n\n\n

I think this chart will make more sense after the tedious analysis of source: classic British and American movies are never shown in their original language by German tax-funded TV. And as we know from Spaceballs<\/a><\/em>, dubbing ruins the jokes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
