{"id":2516,"date":"2023-08-14T13:07:42","date_gmt":"2023-08-14T11:07:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/radishthegreat.com\/blog\/?p=2516"},"modified":"2023-08-14T14:09:42","modified_gmt":"2023-08-14T12:09:42","slug":"august-meatball-stew","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/radishthegreat.com\/blog\/2023\/08\/14\/august-meatball-stew\/","title":{"rendered":"August Meatball Stew"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wunderground.com\/history\/daily\/de\/oberding\/EDDM\/date\/2023-8-7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"Best August weather of all time!\">Best August weather of all time!<\/a> I&#8217;m not complaining: instead of eating cold cheese on bread because it&#8217;s too hot to cook, I got to make meatballs!<br><br>Due to a tragic previous over-purchase of carrots, I settled on this &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.org\/details\/bettycrockersham00croc\/page\/24\/mode\/2up?q=stew\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"Meatball Stew\">Meatball Stew<\/a>&#8220;&#8211;the one without canned soup&#8211;from a 1977 Betty Crocker cookbook that I had discovered some months ago while looking for something else.  (If you&#8217;re looking for cheap eats, Carter-era cookbooks are a good resource, and there are many free to browse at the <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"Internet Archive\">Internet Archive<\/a>.)<br><br>Instead of ground beef, I used the mix of pork and beef sold as standard at every German supermarket.  The crumbs were handmade (food-blogger smirk), earlier in the summer on a day when we accidentally bought more <em><a href=\"https:\/\/radishthegreat.com\/blog\/2023\/07\/18\/obatz-ist-bavarian-style-cheese-spread-for-beginners\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"Brezn\">Brezn<\/a><\/em> than we could eat.  <\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image is-style-default\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"750\" src=\"https:\/\/radishthegreat.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/meatballstew_crumbs.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2517\" srcset=\"https:\/\/radishthegreat.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/meatballstew_crumbs.jpg 600w, https:\/\/radishthegreat.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/meatballstew_crumbs-240x300.jpg 240w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>August 2023<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>The &#8220;Basic Meatballs&#8221; contain both egg and milk, and were very juicy. Once they started to splatter I added the rest of the ingredients and let them finish off in the liquid. I wished I had thrown in more onion, and added mushrooms.
