Then the Milwaukee Brewers were in German TV three times, and YouTube twice, and four Free Games Of The Day&#8230;<br><br>I am not complaining, so you don&#8217;t get to complain, either.<br><br>*Anyone who tells you Europeans &#8220;get along great!&#8221; without air-conditioning is lying to you and you should ask them why.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"has-vivid-red-color has-text-color wp-block-heading\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0072308\/?ref_=ttls_li_tt\">The Towering Inferno<\/a>\u00a0(1974)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Cable, original English<\/em><br>I may have seen part of this on TV or read a Reader&#8217;s Digest except\/novelization as a child; when I saw the name in the listing I got a very clear image of visiting my grandparents&#8217; in my mind (also possible I mixed it up with <em>Adam 12<\/em>, which was on after <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20190917175907\/http:\/\/thefloppyshow.weebly.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Floppy<\/a>).  Most important thing first: <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/cinemacats.com\/the-towering-inferno-1974\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The cat survives<\/a>. <\/strong><br><br>It&#8217;s a classic of the disaster genre with an all-star cast, and the costumes were fabulous. The interior decorating was also incredible&#8211;this high-tech high-fashion building of the mid-70s has lines and abstract decorative elements later used as alien environments in <em>Star Trek: The Next Generation<\/em>&#8211;years later. (And now I have realized <em>TNG<\/em> was closer in time to (notable Hoosier) Steve McQueen saving lives then we are to <em>TNG<\/em> and I need a <em>Schnaps<\/em> and a nap.)<br><br>It maybe could have been about half an hour shorter, and some of the tropes seem a little silly now (staying late to bang her married boss proved fatal for one of the secretaries), but this was a very enjoyable watch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"has-vivid-red-color has-text-color wp-block-heading\">The Ebenhofer Krimis<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Netflix, original Niederbayerisch with German subtitles<\/em><br>A franchise based on a series of comic cozy <a href=\"https:\/\/www.buecherserien.de\/rita-falk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">murder-mystery novels<\/a> set in a village in Niederbayern, featuring a local cop and his dysfunctional personal life on his family&#8217;s farm. At least five of the main characters were played by actors also in the Austrian TV show <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt1934564\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Braunschlag<\/em><\/a>, which was filmed a year earlier and which I had just finished watching.   <br><br>Fun watch, and I noticed a running gag I didn&#8217;t the first time I watched it. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"has-vivid-red-color has-text-color wp-block-heading\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt4129876\/?ref_=ttls_li_tt\">Winterkartoffelkn\u00f6del<\/a>&nbsp;(2014)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The second film in the series features the most gruesome and yet hilarious on-screen murder I have ever seen:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image is-style-default\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"360\" height=\"202\" src=\"https:\/\/radishthegreat.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/5kmd0q-1.gif\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-864\"\/><figcaption><em>Mornings, amirite?<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color wp-block-paragraph\">After being called to the scene and looking under the container, our hero Eberhofer looked &#8220;as pale as a winter potato dumpling,&#8221; hence the title.<br><br>This one has two hilarious musical numbers (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=z023L1n5U9M\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>WARNING<\/strong>: not safe for work, children, and people with good taste<\/a>), and&#8211;I feel this is important&#8211;we learn that the <em>Nudelsalat<\/em> at the swingers&#8217; club in Niederkaltenkirchen is homemade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"has-vivid-red-color has-text-color wp-block-heading\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt4635936\/?ref_=ttls_li_tt\">Schweinskopf al dente<\/a>&nbsp;(2016)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sebastian Bezzel and Simon Schwarz, two of the lead actors, also have a show on the Bayerischer Rundfunk where they travel around Bavaria in an RV and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.br.de\/mediathek\/sendung\/bezzel-und-schwarz-die-grenzgaenger-av:5d07584cd9a41500190a7510\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">meet people with interesting, unusual jobs or projects that do social good<\/a>. I liked the segment about the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.schwaebische.de\/landkreis\/landkreis-biberach\/biberach_artikel,-wenn-dorfpolizist-eberhofer-zum-haare-schneiden-kommt-_arid,11503274.html\">Barber Angels<\/a>, who spend a couple days a month giving free haircuts and products to people who are homeless or living in shelters.<br><br>In this installment, an escaped convict has threatened to kill Eberhofer&#8217;s boss, who hides on the farm and smokes a lot of his father&#8217;s weed. Hilarity ensues. While dealing with all this, his on-and-off <em><a href=\"https:\/\/bar.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gspusi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Gspusi<\/a><\/em> Suzi goes to Italy to live with another man. <br><br>More personal life than crime solving, but that&#8217;s the series.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"has-vivid-red-color has-text-color wp-block-heading\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt5541132\/?ref_=ttls_li_tt\">Grie\u00dfnockerlaff\u00e4re<\/a>&nbsp;(2017)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A secret from his grandmother&#8217;s past wanders onto the farm, shortly after Eberhofer is arrested for the murder of his supervisor.  Of course it all ends well for our hero.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"has-vivid-red-color has-text-color wp-block-heading\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt8500060\/?ref_=ttls_li_tt\">Sauerkrautkoma<\/a>&nbsp;(2018)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Der Eberhofer Franz finally succumbs to the pressure to put a ring on Suzi&#8217;s finger. Oh, and there&#8217;s a dead au-pair in the trunk of his father&#8217;s car. And he&#8217;s forced to move to Munich to live in a closet-sized concrete shitbox with Birkenberger, to work for the woman who tried to put him away for murder.  Hilarity ensues.<br><br>My favorite character, <a href=\"https:\/\/franz-eberhofer.de\/charaktere\/floetzinger\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Fl\u00f6tzinger<\/a>, usually serves as comedic background, but in this installment he provides crucial help for solving the case.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"has-vivid-red-color has-text-color wp-block-heading\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt10375682\/?ref_=ttls_li_tt\">Leberk\u00e4sjunkie<\/a>\u00a0(2019)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Suzi and Franz have split up, but they are still committed to co-parenting their son, Paul, who&#8217;s coming up on a year old.  His birthday party is cute. <br><br>In the course of investigating a murder-arson (the priest from <em>Braunschlag<\/em> is a suspect), Ebenhofer and Birkenberger visit Landshut twice, parking in front of a sewing store. Hmmmm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"has-vivid-red-color has-text-color wp-block-heading\">The Trailer For The Next One<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=z5yozt58wrM\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Starts this week<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=LX2q5m_YCbE\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">.<\/a> Might go see it; might wait until it&#8217;s on TV. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"has-vivid-red-color has-text-color wp-block-heading\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0036868\/?ref_=ttls_li_tt\">The Best Years of Our Lives<\/a>&nbsp;(1946)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>arte, Deutsch<\/em><br>I like Dana Andrews, and I&#8217;m starting to like Frederic March, but the real star of this film about veterans having difficulties returning to their civilian life after WWII is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm0751174\/?ref_=tt_cl_t_8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"Harold Russell\">Harold Russell<\/a>.  He lost both of his hands in a training accident, but became so proficient with prosthetic hooks the Army used him in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=xp1E5smfSDI\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">training film<\/a>, where studio honcho Samuel Goldwyn saw him and recommended him for this movie.<br><br>(After winning the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor, Russell quit Hollywood, got a college degree, and led AMVETS for three terms.)<br><br>It&#8217;s long, but it didn&#8217;t feel long; Hoagy Carmichael contributes some tunes and there is a great sad scene of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=OpGNKO6wz10\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">scrapped warplanes<\/a> at the end.<br><br><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=c0O6NClwJhE&amp;t=2140s\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Highly recommended.<\/a>  Make the kids watch it, too, to see what life was like for their great-grandfathers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"has-vivid-red-color has-text-color wp-block-heading\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0052027\/?ref_=ttls_li_tt\">The Old Man and the Sea<\/a>&nbsp;(1958)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Cable, original English<\/em><br>I was not excited about watching this&#8211;I have a vague impression that my high school English class read it aloud together, someone please confirm or refute!&#8211;but I enjoyed it. Beautiful camera work, good story.
