It was&#8230;OK. They signed on because the ending makes this a great script.<br><br>I&#8217;m not sure it can be watched twice, once you see the ending, but watch it once.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"has-vivid-red-color has-text-color wp-block-heading\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0047849\/?ref_=ttls_li_tt\">Bad Day at Black Rock<\/a>&nbsp;(1955)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Cable, original English<\/em><br>Spencer Tracy stars as a WWII veteran who returned from Italy without the use of his left arm, and travels to a wide spot in the road somewhere in the West to find the father of the fellow soldier who saved his life.  Small problem: He&#8217;s not there.  Bigger problem: Some local ranchers are going to kill Tracy to protect a community secret.<br><br>Good story, satisfying ending (not a happy ending; happy wasn&#8217;t possible). Nice desert scenes.  Also&#8211;I don&#8217;t think this spoils too much&#8211;one-armed Tracy crawls under a jeep and makes a Molotov cocktail with his tie while being shot at. Inspiring!! I really wish I&#8217;d seen this movie <a href=\"https:\/\/radishthegreat.com\/blog\/2020\/11\/16\/die-kaputte-linke-hand\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">two years ago<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"has-vivid-red-color has-text-color wp-block-heading\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0070291\/?ref_=ttls_li_tt\">The Last of Sheila<\/a>&nbsp;(1973)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Cable, original English<\/em><br>Murder mystery on a yacht off the coast of France; everyone on board works in Hollywood and everyone on board has a secret that could ruin their public image&#8211;things no one blinks at anymore, like shoplifting, homosexuality, and vehicular manslaughter. Definite time capsule.  The reveal of the murderer&#8217;s identity was a surprise, and I always appreciate that.<br><br>I&#8217;m always trying to imagine a contemporary remake of old films (Why not? There&#8217;s nothing new anymore&#8230;) and I have no idea what sort of secret would be devastating to a Hollywooder of today.  <br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"has-vivid-red-color has-text-color wp-block-heading\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0076759\/?ref_=ttls_li_tt\">Star Wars<\/a>&nbsp;(1977)&#8211;1997 rerelease<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><em>German Free TV, Deutsch<\/em><br>It was at least five years since the last time we saw it in German Free TV; Mr R wanted to watch the beginning, then we just let it run. So many commercials&#8211;never watch a movie in German Free TV unless you&#8217;ve seen it a dozen times already.<br><br>Notes:  All the post-production bright pink lighting in the rerelease didn&#8217;t bother me in &#8217;97*, but it was really annoying now. The guy who does Hamill&#8217;s German voice is less whiny than Hamill, but Vader&#8217;s voice is higher and less impressive than James Earl Jones. I have forgotten the other details of this roadtrip and am too lazy to dig around in the basement for my old longhand blogs. But I remember the theater.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"has-vivid-red-color has-text-color wp-block-heading\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0048380\/?ref_=ttls_li_tt\">Mister Roberts<\/a>\u00a0(1955)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Cable, original English<\/em><br>A comedy, set on a cargo ship in the Pacific Theater in the waning days of The War, but ultimately about male friendships and the respect men can develop for each other when they&#8217;re doing stuff together.  Still funny, although younger viewers may lack context to understand the gags (and could possibly be triggered by blatant displays of heterosexuality).<br><br>Final scene was poignant. One of the top movies of the month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"has-vivid-red-color has-text-color wp-block-heading\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0098621\/?ref_=ttls_li_tt\">The War of the Roses<\/a>\u00a0(1989)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Cable, original English<\/em><br><em>Viewer warning for murdered cat.<\/em><br>The IMDB calls this &#8220;romance&#8221;? Yikes.<br><br>In high school, I thought this was funny.  I still liked Danny DeVito&#8217;s character, and the set up where he narrates the story to a young client.  But this movie has not aged well, or I have not aged well.  Sigh.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"has-vivid-red-color has-text-color wp-block-heading\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt1745960\/?ref_=ttls_li_tt\">Top Gun: Maverick<\/a>&nbsp;(2022)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Kino! Original English<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image is-style-default\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/radishthegreat.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/maverick_phoenix.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1258\" width=\"510\" height=\"750\" srcset=\"https:\/\/radishthegreat.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/maverick_phoenix.jpg 680w, https:\/\/radishthegreat.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/maverick_phoenix-204x300.jpg 204w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 510px) 100vw, 510px\" \/><figcaption><em>Preview in M\u00fcnchen<br>May 2022<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Mr Radish surprised me with tickets to see this one at a Preview at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cinema-muenchen.de\/home.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Cinema in M\u00fcnchen<\/a>, the day before the official German release (which was a day before the official US release, because in Germany the new movies come out on Thursdays). Apparently I have mentioned more than once how cool the planes looked when I saw the anniversary re-release of the original on a big screen, after years of seeing it on a VHS player borrowed from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.statecenter.lib.ia.us\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the library<\/a>.<br><br>Yes, it&#8217;s basically a remake of the original. It was still very good. I will poke fun at how carefully the studio made sure the &#8220;rogue state&#8221; where the mission is flown was not identifiable&#8211;gotta make that Chinese money&#8211;but it&#8217;s clear from the terrain and a scruffy maple-leaf-shaped bird painted on the <a href=\"https:\/\/liberalarts.oregonstate.edu\/wlf\/what-deus-ex-machina\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Deus Ex Machina<\/a> that the bad actor with nuclear ambitions is Canada.  Ed Harris is the only &#8220;veteran actor&#8221; in this film without a <a href=\"https:\/\/radishthegreat.com\/blog\/2021\/01\/11\/radishflix-2021-highlights-of-kw01\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">creepy painting in his attic.<\/a> But you know Ice and Mav are old, because they use complete sentences with punctuation when they text.<br><br>It&#8217;s good, go see it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"has-vivid-red-color has-text-color wp-block-heading\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0051554\/?ref_=ttls_li_tt\">Horror of Dracula<\/a>&nbsp;(1958)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Cable, original English<\/em><br>The Christopher Lee flick the <a href=\"https:\/\/radishthegreat.com\/blog\/2022\/03\/22\/happy-birthday-nosferatu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Pakistani Drac<\/a> was based on&#8211;except in 1950s Britain there was no need to add dancing girls or censor out crucifixes.  It was probably scarier sixty years ago, but when you get <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm0001088\/?ref_=tt_cl_t_5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Grand Moff Tarkin<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0096895\/?ref_=ttls_li_tt\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Bruce Wayne&#8217;s valet<\/a> teamed up to hunt the undead, you have a good time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"has-vivid-red-color has-text-color wp-block-heading\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0111756\/?ref_=ttls_li_tt\">Wyatt Earp<\/a>\u00a0(1994)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Netflix, original English<\/em><br>Crazy all-star cast&#8211;dozens of big-time names from a hundred all-time great movies and TV shows&#8211;and yet I found that finishing it was a chore. The script is long and dull. Notable: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm0002111\/?ref_=ttfc_fc_cl_t28\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ma Ingalls<\/a> appears as Earp&#8217;s mother-in-law.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"has-vivid-red-color has-text-color wp-block-heading\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0097967\/?ref_=ttls_li_tt\">Next of Kin<\/a>\u00a0(1989)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Cable, original<\/em> <em>English<\/em><br>Another crazy all-star cast&#8211;<a href=\"https:\/\/starwars.fandom.com\/wiki\/Qui-Gon_Jinn\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Qui-Gon Jinn<\/a>! <a href=\"https:\/\/babylon5.fandom.com\/wiki\/G%27Kar\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">G&#8217;Kar<\/a>! <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20220316142935\/https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/culture\/article\/20160212-the-male-model-how-did-we-get-to-zoolander\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Zoolander<\/a>!&#8211;but this one was actually good. <a href=\"https:\/\/radishthegreat.com\/blog\/2021\/10\/29\/ufo-update-scrap-hexagon-flower-top\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Patrick Swayze<\/a> stars as a man from a Kentucky holler turned&#8211;get this&#8211;Chicago detective who has distanced himself a bit from his roots until his little brother is murdered by <a href=\"https:\/\/x-files.fandom.com\/wiki\/Knowle_Rohrer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">an alien-hybrid supersoldier<\/a>&#8230;er, a rogue in the Chicago mafia.
